The Chevrolet Silverado is fine until it’s not. Competitors’ full-size trucks get a major makeover with great features and cutting-edge new technology, leaving the outgoing generation feeling pretty low rent by comparison.
But the 2022 Silverado brings a Big half-ton back to the competition, Some unique tricks and an overall glowing hell.
From a distance, the new Silverado might not look all that new. All the Silverado needs is a little wrinkle in the front panel because the exterior aesthetics aren’t the reason anyone talks about crap in the first place.
The grille on my High Country tester looks a bit like an air conditioner, but Overall very sharp. The $445 Multi-Flex tailgate adds a ton of versatility to the bed, while the $1,495 retractable side steps make it easier for shorts to get in and out, and they rest nicely against the body when not in use.

A range of engines—including a turbocharged four-cylinder two V-8s and a Duramax diesel 3.0 liter inline-six—means the Silverado 1500 is suitable for any job. Of the two eight-cylinder engines, the 420-horsepower 6.2 liter was the quickest to 60 mph in the Silverado Heights we tested. Just 5.4 seconds. By comparison, the smaller 355-horsepower 5.3 liter takes 6.1 seconds.
The turbocharged 2.7 liter four-cylinder now has 420 pound-feet of torque, which should help during towing duties. The diesel-powered Silverado we tested had the slowest acceleration, but we were impressed by the smooth and quiet operation of the engine.
Every version of the Silverado we drove felt smaller than it would suggest. The truck’s handling is surprisingly agile, and the brake pedal provides firm and reassuring feedback. Those looking for a stronger half-ton Silverado Will appreciate the Trail Boss model.

2022 Chevy Silverado Towing and Payload Capacity
With a maximum towing capacity of 13,300 pounds, the half-ton Silverado is a very capable truck. It’s 550 pounds more than the Ram 1500s maximum towing rating, but 700 pounds less than the F-150.
Chevrolet’s top towing rating is for the diesel engine and 6.2 liter V-8, butt the 5.3 liter Versions can still handle up to 11,500 lbs. Models with the turbocharged four-cylinder can tow up to 9,500 pounds. The Chevrolet pickup’s powertrain doesn’t matter much in terms of payloads ranging from 1870 to 2280 pounds.
2022 Chevy Silverado Fuel Economy and MPG
Don’t expect the Silverado 1500 to save you money on the fuel pump, but some of its various powertrain options are more efficient than others. The optional diesel is the most economical, with EPA estimates of up to 23 MPG city and 33 MPG.
With all-wheel drive its highway rating drops to 26 Our MPG matched on the 75-mph fuel-economy route. Meanwhile, the gas-turbocharged four-cylinder engine with all-wheel drive is rated at up to 20 MPG city and 22 highways.
The most frugal 5.3 liter V-8 all-wheel-drive powertrain is rated at a whopping 16 MPG in the city and 22 MPG on the highway; in our real-world tests, It was revealed that it’s actually more efficient than the Silverado’s smallest turbo four: In our testing the V-8 hit 21 MPG while the turbo four returned 18 MPG.

Otherwise, the 2022 Chevy Silverado is a regular pickup truck. Buyers can choose between a diesel inline-6 a turbocharged inline-4 or two different V8s and my tester came with the top-of-the-line 6.2 liter V8 which has plenty of 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.
It is not At an EPA-estimated 15 MPG city and 20 MPG highway number, I found it easy to meet but not the easiest to beat. Still, all that oomph allows for a 13,300-pound max towing power before the Ram 1500 but slightly less than the Ford F-150. 10-speed automatic transmission is smooth shift lever up and down, but excessive low-speed throttle sensitivity makes smooth launches more difficult than I’d like.

More attention was paid to the interior. Base and work-focused trims use a carry bay, but the LT and higher trims get a more modern interior that’s more attractive than before and quite different from the related Tahoe and Suburban SUVs.
The redesigned interior brings a configurable 12.3-inch screen to the dashboard and a 13.4-inch wide touchscreen for the infotainment system. The system is compatible with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and integrates built-in Google features like voice commands.
Models with bucket seats have a monostable electronic gear selector on the centre console, which returns to centre once a gear is reclined. Trucks with benches continue to use a steering column-mounted shift lever.
Moving up through the trim level brings more premium touches like open-pore wood trim and perforated leather upholstery.
2022 Chevy Silverado Outside
The exterior gets a mild refresh for 2022 with a new front fascia and grille on every trim. Notably, the Chevrolet “bow tie” logo is positioned higher than before near the hood line, rather than in the centre of the grille.
New daytime running lights feature animated walk and walk function. Yep, if those are the biggest changes, it’s definitely a mild cosmetic update.
Safety and Driver Assistance Systems
Chevrolet addressed a notable shortcoming for the 2021 model year, making key active safety features standard equipment on all trims. Previously, buyers could spend thousands of dollars upgrading lower-spec trucks to get these features.
Standard for 2022: Forward Collision Warning Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection Lane Keeping Assist Lane Departure Warning Automatic High Beam Video Rearview Mirrors and “Drive with Buckle” requiring driver’s seat belt to be fastened before transmission is activated to transfer from the park.
The Super Cruise driver assistance system is available for the first time in pickup trucks equipped with the updated Silverado. Silverado High Country Super Cruise 2.0 is equipped with a variety of sensors and systems including a driver attention monitor enabling the truck to 200,000 mapped roads in the United States and Canada.
This latest version has a lane change feature. Unlike similar systems offered by other auto-makers, Super Cruise uses coloured lights on the steering wheel rim to clearly communicate whether the driver or the vehicle is in control. Along with Silverado Super Cruise allows hands-free towing.
Chevrolet has expanded its Electronic Traction Assist for 2022 with up to eight cameras (including a virtual rearview camera) trailer factor blind-spot warning trailer-specific adaptive cruise control and an in-vehicle app for adjusting various factors.
