The Kia Sorento doesn’t fit into either vehicle class. It’s about the size of a midsize SUV, but still fits in the third row despite being smaller than most three-row crossovers. Redesigned for the 2021 model year, the Sorento now offers a variety of powertrain options, including a Hybrid setup with a six-passenger seating arrangement.

What We Think

There’s a lot to like about the latest Sorento. It’s sleek and spacious, beautifully appointed and very nice to drive. Well, that last point isn’t quite true for the Sorento Hybrid.

In terms of functionality, Sorento is a success. While its third row isn’t very roomy, it’s more than adequate for short trips. When it’s folded, there’s plenty of cargo space behind the second row. There’s plenty of headroom and legroom for those riding in the first two rows.

the Sorento Hybrid back-to-back with the 2.5 litre petrol turbo engine were less than impressed with the electrified powertrain. This is perhaps not surprising. It’s far less powerful, and the 2021 model we reviewed was FWD only. AWD is now available By 2022 the efficiency and smart packaging of the Sorento Hybrid will become even more compelling. Even so, styling will be its most exciting attribute.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The Sorento Hybrid is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder gas engine and electric motor. Total powertrain output is 227 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It’s all sent through a six-speed automatic transmission, with FWD standard and AWD available as a new option for 2022. Tested the FWD Sorento Hybrid from 0 to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds. Is There a Sorento Plug-In Hybrid?

Just as efficient as the Sorento Hybrid is the new Plug-In Hybrid version that uses less gasoline. Its powertrain is based on the same turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the Sorento Hybrid, but with a 13.8 kWh battery for true all-electric driving. Sorento PHEV is EPA certified for 32 miles, The range on a fully charged battery is enough distance to cover most drivers’ daily commute. When the gas engine kicks in, it’s rated at 79 mpg-e. Technology

Choose the Sorento Hybrid and you get upgraded technical features over the standard Sorento. That includes a 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen larger than the 8.0-inch screen in the base petrol Sorento. Includes Apple CarPlay Android Auto and built-in navigation. USB ports are installed in all three rows, and the high-end Sorento Hybrid EX has a wireless charging pad on the front. The Sorento Hybrid has a 4.3-inch instrument cluster display; the 12.3-inch digital instrument display available on the standard Sorento is absent on the Hybrid. The six-speaker sound system is Standard, in our experience sounds good.

Recommended Trim

2022 Kia Sorento

The Sorento Hybrid is only available in two trim levels: S and EX, both with AWD. Although this is the more expensive option, we recommend opting for the EX trim. Our main reason is that it has adaptive cruise control, one of the most useful features in the automotive world last few years. There are a few other handy EX-exclusive features too like a power tailgate and a wireless device charging pad. Plus the Sorento Hybrid EX costs about $2,000 more than the S trim which seems worthwhile for the improved ease of use. That means it will sell for around $37,000 FWD and AWD are less than $40,000.
