Rivian is an electric vehicle manufacturer founded in 2009. The company’s first product, the R1T pickup truck, is scheduled to be released in late 2020. The R1T is an all-electric vehicle with a range of over 400 miles and a starting price of $69,000. Rivian has also announced plans to release an SUV, the R1S, in 2021.

Rivian R1T Performance
The Rivian R1T is almost an incredible utility vehicle. For starters, it sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds in our testing. It also corners better and stops in shorter distances than any other pickup on the market today. Did we mention that the R1T is probably Mid-duty truck size but, 7150 pounds? That’s the realm of heavy trucks.
Aside from insanely quick acceleration, the advantage of having four electric motors is the amount of regenerative braking you can get. This definitely helps the R1T stop faster and even allows for one-pedal driving, meaning you can just use the accelerator.
What do you mean by off-road? Thanks to ample ground clearance and short overhangs, the R1T has legit off-road performance. How you’re going to charge in the middle of nowhere is an open question, but at least you can have the satisfaction of knowing that the R1T will get you there.
Rivian R1T Interior
Rivian’s adjustable air suspension raises and lowers the ride height by 6.5 inches, making it very easy to get in and out to truck standards. As long as the gear access door is, You are sliding out of the rear seat. Front and rear passenger space is ample. The back seat isn’t quite as roomy as a typical full-size cab, but it’s better than most midsize trucks.
Our biggest criticism of the R1T is its touchscreen-based user interface. Most of the R1T’s controls rely on a large central touchscreen which was very error-prone, touchscreen, at least in our early production test vehicles. We had booked the screen control cabin so when They are slow or unresponsive which is really frustrating. We hope this is an area that Rivian will improve with over-the-air software updates.
Ending up with, the R1T’s treble visibility is excellent. The square-shaped greenhouse offers an excellent 360-degree view, and Rivian’s exterior cameras can capture anything beyond the natural line of sight.
Rivian R1T Comfort
Rivian is more comfortable than most other pickups. A clear key advantage is its quiet electric powertrain which helps keep it quiet, but the R1T also does a good job of keeping most wind and ambient noise out of the cabin, even if some road noise is manageable to sneak into.
Ride comfort isn’t quite as comfortable as a Honda Ridgeline or even a Ram 1500, but for a truck that weighs as much as a heavy-duty truck, the adaptive air suspension does a commendable job of moderating most road irregularities. The seats look great and are comfortable, but Adjustment is fairly basic and lateral support is a bit light.
Rivian definitely learned a lesson from Tesla’s climate control playbook. The vents are adjusted via a touchscreen, while feeling futuristic and overly complicated. But with four-zone control and multiple vents for rear passengers, there’s a lot of coverage and customization.
Rivian R1T Technology
By far the most disappointing aspect of the Rivian is the state of its in-vehicle technology. Like Tesla, Rivian chose to create its own in-car multimedia interface rather than adopting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto like most other manufacturers.
If the system is like this worked, but the Bluetooth connection proved unreliable in our test truck.We like how the integrated navigation system locates the charger and even provides real-time availability and maximum kilowatt output, but we don’t like how the map stops tracking our location if we zoom in.
Advanced driver-assistance systems were another area that seemed immature in our test vehicles. Adaptive cruise control would frequently cancel us for no apparent reason, sometimes slowing down as it was identified as a potential hazard that most other vehicle systems would not have a problem with any. Lane-centric highway assist only works on our interstates, not even on clear roads. Hopefully Rivian will address these issues in a future software update.
A neat feature is a large portable Bluetooth-compatible speaker stowed under the center console’s upholders. It’s automatically recharged by the R1T’s battery while it’s in storage, which certainly makes the trail all the more festive.
Rivian R1T Towing and Storage
Storage is where Rivian really shines. For starters, the 11-cubic-foot front trunk is probably big enough for most of your weekend grocery needs and then some. The R1T’s signature gear tunnel is an 11.7-cubic-foot area located in The cabin and bed can be used to store everything from golf clubs to snowboards.
Rivian even offers a cool (but pricey) portable slide-out camp kitchen that can be installed in the gear channel.
As for storage space in the cabin, there may be more space than areas to organize. A deep center arm bin can easily swallow a standing 40-ounce water bottle, and it’s likely to be where you store most of your unseen items. Just in front of it is a big open space The driver’s and front passenger’s feet were used to hold bags or purses, but no glove box was found.
As far as truck figures go, the Rivian has a maximum payload capacity of 1,760 pounds, which basically beats any midsize truck. The cargo bed even features an underfloor cargo compartment that can hold a full-size spare or a ton of ice and drinks, just like the Honda Ridgeline’s bed.
Towing The maximum capacity reaches an impressive 11,000 pounds which even rivals the capacity of some full-size trucks. However, don’t expect to be near the normal range of the truck when towing a heavy trailer. Charging with an additional trailer is also cumbersome due to the layout of Most DC fast charging stations.
Rivian R1T Efficiency
In our real-world testing we managed to get 317 miles on a full charge. During this period, our test truck used 46.9 kWh per 100 miles. That makes the R1T the least efficient EV we’ve tested to date. To achieve a range of 317 miles we fully charge the battery for maximum range, It should only be used on longer road trips. Rivian recommends lowering daily usage costs.
The R1T comes with an 11.5-kilowatt onboard charger that can add 25 miles of range in an hour. While no DC fast-charging rates are specified, Rivian says you can add 140 miles of range in just 20 minutes with the right charging station.

That said, Rivian still There’s still some work to be done on its user interface software and advanced driver aids. We encountered quite a few glitches in our test vehicles, which we hope will be fixed with a software update. The lack of full smartphone integration is also a bit disappointing.
